Question from Tiffany:
Do over the counter color shampoos really work?
Beauty Squad Answer:
Color shampoos can be beneficial if you know which one to use for your particular hair type. Color shampoos are just shampoo with pigment added which coats the hair temporarily and can enhance the life of the color if used properly, however, if the wrong color shampoo is used it can have the opposite efect, causing the color to dull and loose shine. If a cool brown shampoo is used where a warm brown is called for, then the result will be in neutralizing the color and making it dull-similarly for blondes. If a golden blonde shampoo is needed and a violet blonde shampoo is used, this will cause the hair to dull and appear gray. If a violet is needed and a golden shampoo is used, this will make the hair appear more brassy, similarly for cool red and warm red shampoos.
The BEST way to deal with this is to get a color shampoo recommendation from a professional colorist, EVEN BETTER is to get a COLOR EHHANCING glaze at the salon, this will be mixed by a professional to your specific needs and usually include a shine enhancing product. A color glaze also has a life expactncy of approx 4 weeks. Color shampoos are very temporary even when used correctly!
